It's "bitter" because researchers keep investing in clever, domain-specific structure — and keep getting overtaken by simpler methods that just use more compute and data.
The pattern, repeated
- Chess / Go — hand-coded strategy lost to massive search and self-play.
- Speech & vision — engineered features (phonemes, edge detectors) lost to learned representations from deep nets.
- Language — grammars and pipelines lost to next-token prediction at scale.
Each time, the strong human prior helped early, then capped the ceiling; the general, compute-hungry method kept improving as resources grew.
Why it happens
Human-designed structure is satisfying and helps in the short term, but it doesn't scale — it bakes in our limited understanding. General methods (search and learning) have no such ceiling: give them more compute and data and they keep getting better. This is the strategic backbone behind "just scale it" and the foundation-model era.
The nuance (don't over-apply it)
The bitter lesson is about the long-run frontier, not your Tuesday. In practice:
- With limited data/compute, a good prior (the right model, features) still wins — see trees on tabular data.
- The lesson favors general methods, but data quality, evals, and system design are where most applied work lives.
- It's an observation about trajectory, not a license to throw compute at everything.
Pitfall
Two opposite mistakes: over-engineering clever structure that scale will erase, and cargo-culting "just add compute" when you have neither the data nor the budget — and a simpler, prior-rich model would have won. Hold the lesson as a direction, not a recipe.
